"It’s the second coming of the Toyota FT-1.
Tonight at 5 p.m. PST, Toyota will pull the cover off of a second concept version of its highly successful FT-1 super sports car at The Jet Party at Monterey. Both versions of the FT-1 will be shown, squeezed between classic supercars and big business jets. The setting will be as lavish and every bit as spectacular as you would imagine: champagne, hors d'oeuvres, hundreds of beautiful people (and three ugly ones). Showing off both the first and second FT-1s here is a good way to gauge popular reaction to the car among people who might buy it -- and to use that popular reaction to present a case to Tokyo for the car’s production.

The exterior grayish-looking blend is called “graphite,” and the interior colors are redone in what Toyota designers are calling “saddle.” We saw the second FT-1 colors at an exclusive preview at Toyota’s Calty design center weeks before the car’s public unveiling. The new colors really did give the car a different image. Where the first red and black concept was pure sports car, in the second car’s colors, it looked far more like a luxury ride. That was our impression, at least: the red car with black interior is more of a pure sports car and the graphite car with lighter yellowish “saddle” interior is a more upscale gran touring car. Ultimately it’ll be your decision if it works, since public enthusiasm has an awful lot to do with whether a carmaker makes a car.
